A Brief Overview of the Notable Moments
of the Academy

August 1997:

Creation of the Francis Poulenc Academy dedicated to the interpretation of French melody. Initiated by François Le Roux, famous international baritone, and supported by the city of Tours, led by the deputy for culture Jean-Pierre Tolochard. The name is approved by Madame Rosine Seringe, niece and holder of the moral rights to the works of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). Location: CNR Francis Poulenc in Tours, from August 25 to 31. Since then, the academy has taken place every year at the same time, highlighting 12 singer-pianist duos. On August 25, François Le Roux and Jeff Cohen give an inaugural recital: “Panorama of French Mélodie”.

August 1999:

In tribute to the centenary of the birth of Francis Poulenc, British soprano Felicity Lott and pianist Graham Johnson offer a memorable recital at the Grand-Théâtre, followed by masterclasses for Academy trainees. A conference on the composer is led by musicologist Myriam Chimènes. Starting this year, each guest artist will host masterclasses, and many musicologists participate in the conferences.

September 1999:

The Academy becomes a non-profit association (law 1901) with François Lesure as first president.

February 21, 2002:

Recital “Homage to Chabrier” by François Le Roux and Alexandre Tharaud at the Priory of Saint-Cosme.

August 2002:

The Academy highlights the musicians of the “Group of Six”, with the participation of these composers’ heirs.

August 2004:

The Minister of Culture Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres attends several events, including the signing of the book “Le Chant intime – de l’interpretation de la mélodie française” by F. Le Roux and Romain Raynaldy.

January 9, 2005:

Concert at the Vinci Congress Center in honor of the 80th birthday of Noël Lee, founding member of the Academy.

August 22, 2006:

Exceptional visit from composer Henri Dutilleux, who hosts a masterclass and attends a recital dedicated to “A visit to Francis Poulenc”.

August 21, 2009:

Evening at the “Nouvel Olympia” theater dedicated to Poulenc, with vocal and instrumental performances.

April 17, 2011:

Concert « Ronsard and his musicians » at the Priory of Saint-Cosme, with the participation of composers who contributed to the event.

October 2, 2011:

Recital « English melodies by French composers » in the village hall of the Town Hall.

August 2012 :

Retirement of Noël Lee and Jean-Claude Penchenat, replaced respectively by Christian Ivaldi and another stage teacher.

August 26, 2013:

Recital « Britten & Poulenc » by Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson at the Grand-Théâtre de Tours.

November 12 & 14, 2013:

Concerts of the complete melodies of Poulenc by various artists.

March 14, 2015:

“Mirrors, Debussy, his piano, his melodies” day at the auditorium of the Faculty of Musicology in Tours.

March 12, 2016:

Celebrating twenty years of the Academy with a special day at the Grand-Théâtre de Tours.

August 2017:

The Academy focuses on Charles Baudelaire with the creation of new melodies.

August 19, 2018:

Exceptional masterclass by Gabriel Tacchino on the pianistic work of Francis Poulenc.

August 25, 2019:

Day of free recitals in the park of the Château de Chaumont.

August 2020:

The Academy continues despite the pandemic, with the theme of “animal melodies” and a special screening of the film “A Journey to America”.

August 2022:

The CRR Francis Poulenc auditorium is made available to the Academy.

May 2023:

Death of Claudine Bensaïd, former poetry teacher.

August 2023:

Anne Constantin replaces Ingrid Perruche as singing teacher.
