The 500th Anniversary
of the Birth of Pierre de Ronsard

THE POET OF THE PLÉIADE, WHO ENDED HIS LIFE AT THE PRIORY OF SAINT COSME NEAR TOURS, WAS BORN FIVE CENTURIES AGO, AND WE WILL CELEBRATE HIM ON THIS ANNIVERSARY OCCASION.

His poetry has often been set to music by composers of his time, and numerous melodies have been composed in the 20th century by Saint-Saëns, Francis Poulenc, Albert Roussel, Georges Enesco, and Florent Schmitt, as well as by many composers up to the present day. On the website of the Priory, one can read about the exhibition from June 22 to September 22: « On the occasion of the poet’s half-millennium (1524-1585), the Priory of Saint-Cosme, residence of Ronsard, property of the department of Indre-et-Loire, in collaboration with the Center for Renaissance Studies, Sorbonne University, and Paris-Cité University, proposes a unique exhibition in the refectory of the Priory where the Prince of Poets lived and where he is buried. This exhibition aims to highlight not only the poet’s approach to the arts but also how the arts engage with Ronsard’s poetry and persona, from the 16th century to the present day. It notably explores the Vendôme poet’s relationships with music. »
